Spouses

Husband gets 1/2 if no children, 1/4 if children exist (Quran 4:12)
Wife gets 1/4 if no children, 1/8 if children exist (Quran 4:12). Multiple wives share this portion.

Parents

Father gets 1/6 if deceased has children, otherwise may get residual as 'Asabah (Quran 4:11)
Mother gets 1/6 if deceased has children or siblings, 1/3 otherwise (Quran 4:11)

Children

Sons inherit as residuary ('Asabah), getting twice the share of daughters (Quran 4:11)
Single daughter gets 1/2, multiple daughters share 2/3 (Quran 4:11)

Siblings

Brothers inherit only if no parents or children exist, getting twice sisters' share
Single sister gets 1/2, multiple sisters share 2/3 when no children or parents exist

Distribution Results

Quranic Fixed Shares (Faraid)

  • Husband: 1/2 (no children), 1/4 (with children)
  • Wife: 1/4 (no children), 1/8 (with children) - shared among wives
  • Father: 1/6 (with children), residual otherwise
  • Mother: 1/6 (with children or siblings), 1/3 otherwise
  • Daughter: 1/2 (single), 2/3 shared (multiple)
  • Son: Residual (gets twice daughter's share)
  • Full Sister: 1/2 (single), 2/3 shared (multiple) when no children/parents

'Asabah (Residual Heirs)

'Asabah are relatives who inherit what remains after fixed shares are distributed. Males typically receive twice females' shares.

Order of 'Asabah:

  1. Son, then son's son (descendants)
  2. Father, then grandfather (ascendants)
  3. Brother, then nephew (collateral)
  4. Male relatives through father

Special Cases in Inheritance

  • Grandparents: May inherit when parents are deceased
  • Uterine Siblings: Share 1/3 if no children/parents
  • Pregnant Wife: Inheritance held until birth
  • Missing Person: Estate held until status confirmed
  • Non-Muslim Relatives: Do not inherit from Muslims
